Henry took the car on a Saturday night, and it wasn’t how I pictured it.

Before this year, I had imagined what it would feel like the first time Henry was out driving with his buddies on a Saturday night.

Last night, I found myself chatting with Matt and sitting on the trampoline of our sailboat under a sky full of stars, watching for the tiny navigation lights of our dinghy to appear across the anchorage.

Henry had picked up one of his best friends and gone to another boat for “teen night”. He had a VHF radio. He knew where he was going. And he was out in the darkness on a Saturday night with his buddies. But I wasn't scared like I thought I would be the first time he “took the car”.

Because nothing could happen, but because I have seen him demonstrate a level of maturity and responsibility that warrants the privilege. Because this little anchorage has become something I never knew could exist. It's a neighborhood of sorts, a unique, dynamic community. When someone new arrives, they dinghy around and introduce themselves. We all connect on WhatsApp all day. We give each other rides, help each other with boat projects, play with each other's kids, and organize evening bonfires and marathon tubing sessions.

Someone is always watching. Someone is always helping. The kids here aren't growing up inside carefully scheduled playdates. They're growing up charting their own course. They're driving dinghies. Helping each other launch foils. Teaching one another to wake surf. Learning to free dive. Looking out for younger kids. Sailing Hobie Cats in the bay. They are making critical contributions to their crew, and they know they are meeting the challenges we face daily. They are jumping off the boat into the ocean, living their lives to the fullest. It isn't freedom without responsibility. It's freedom because of responsibility.

Watching the kids grow out here is pure magic, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the families we get to watch them grow with.
